Materials We Use
Classic Stone can source a wide range of materials for your project; listed below are some of the more common materials that we utilize along with the differentiating characteristics of each one. We always recommend doing your research as you decide which countertop material fits your needs.
We recommend the Natural Stone Institute for fully updated and objective information on all types of stone.
Granite
Granite is a natural stone, quarried from the earth in its natural state and sliced into slabs for use in your home. There is a wide color range available, each unique so the possibilities are endless. Granite can stand up to the most difficult situations and uses, easily handling hot pans or sharp knives. Granite in its natural state is a porous substance so at installation we will apply a protective sealant. We recommend using a granite specific cleaner on your installed stone to extend the timeframe between sealer applications.

Quartz
Quartz has become a leading choice in countertops due to its durability, strength and beautiful designs. The quartz slabs are manufactured using a mixture 85-93% natural quartz particles mixed with resin and pigment. The higher the quartz particulate percentage indicates the higher the brand performance will be. Quartz slabs are non-porous, so maintenance-free, bacteria free and highly stain and scratch resistant. Cambria is the leader in the quartz industry with over 200 designs, is owned and manufactured in Minnesota and comes with a transferable lifetime warranty.

Marble
Marble is a beautiful surface but one that is softer than the granite and quartz slabs. Due to its composition it can have a higher porosity which can allow it to etch or scratch if not cared for properly. This is a stone that we recommend sealing regularly to protect its original condition. In some applications, people prefer to let the surface accumulate a natural patina over time to enjoy this surface in a traditional design. We often recommend a matte finish for the slab selection as it will wear better than the polished. It is also heat resistant, so a good choice for bakers and fireplace surrounds.

Quartzite
This natural stone has the beautiful look and feel of marble but it has a higher density so it can be more durable than marble. It is still very important to seal this natural stone as it is porous. It requires maintenance and should not be confused with the manufactured quartz slabs mentioned above. Without proper care the quartzite slabs can still scratch, etch or stain.

Soapstone
If you remember high school chemistry, then you know soapstone. It is non-porous and stain resistant, so anti-bacterial and durable. It does require regular oiling rather than sealing. Soapstone may wear unevenly, showing lighter areas where it gets used the most. Colors are very limited and it is costly, but for those dedicated to being eco-friendly, it is a good investment.
